Effective Communication in Leadership

It is often said that “everything rises and falls on leadership,” however, sometimes we fail to realise that leadership rises and falls on communication.
Effective communication enables the leader to motivate, inspire, influence and show direction to the team.

Leadership is about influence, and our communication skill will determine whether we positively or negatively influence our teams, hence the need to be good examples. In the words of Albert Schweitzer, “example is not the main thing in influencing others. It is the only thing.”

Leaders who want to be effective in communicating with their teams should be mindful of these 3Cs in all of their messages:
1.       Consistency
2.      Clarity
3.       Courtesy

  1. absolutely Communication must be the bedrock of effective leadership

    1. Thank you Efimia for your thoughts on this piece. #HRwithEM

  2. You have not communicated, if ur message is not Clare or detailed enough for even a laymen to understand and if u don't forget that you are leading human beings who have emotions and self value (dignity) that they are not Roberts as a result, courtesy is very paramount. Though human beings are the most difficult creatures to lead but when rhis 3cs are put in place in leadership, the burden of leadership will be minimised and u will not only hit ur target as a team but you will also be raising leaders with the right mind set for teamwork.

  3. I absolutely agree that communication is a vital leadership tool. The question about an employee bypassing his immediate boss and consulting a higher level boss was impressively handled. An employee should report to and be answerable to one leader to avoid confusion. The 3Cs are my take home key points. Thank you for the insightful programme.

    1. Thank you Jan for sharing your thoughts. #HRwithEM

  4. This is a very insightful and educative piece, communication is the bedrock of every successful relationship, including that of a leader and his/her team. The 3c's are my take from this interesting topic. Thank you so much sir for sharing.

This is really a topic to cogitate on. "leadership rises and falls on communication".

    Thank you for this.

  6. Communication is vital in leadership. Without it the leader starts losing his team members and hence want to look up to another leader. Great!
